DENIM GUIDE

01

What is Selvedge Denim?

Selvedge (or “self-edge”) denim is woven on old-style shuttle looms that produce a narrow strip of fabric with a clean, finished edge on both sides. This self-finished edge prevents fraying and is the hallmark of premium denim.

Modern wide looms produce fabric that must be cut and serged, leaving rough edges. Shuttle looms are slower and produce narrower bolts of fabric, but the resulting denim is denser, more durable, and develops character over time in a way mass-produced denim simply cannot.

The coloured thread running along the selvedge edge (often red, hence “redline”) identifies the mill. When you cuff your jeans, this clean edge is visible — the subtle signature of quality.

02

Raw vs. Washed Denim

Raw (unwashed) denim has not been washed or treated after dyeing. It starts stiff and dark, then softens and develops unique fade patterns based on how you wear it. Every pair becomes truly one-of-a-kind.

Unsanforized denim goes a step further — it hasn’t been pre-shrunk. Expect 1–2 inches of shrinkage in the waist and 2–3 inches in length after your first soak. Size accordingly, or embrace the custom fit that comes from shrink-to-fit.

One-wash denim has been soaked once to remove most shrinkage while keeping the raw character. A good middle ground if you want a predictable fit from day one.

Denim Weight Guide

WEIGHT FEEL BEST FOR
10–12oz Lightweight, soft Summer, warmer climates
13–15oz Medium, versatile Year-round, daily wear
16–18oz Heavy, structured Autumn/winter, bold fades
19oz+ Very heavy, stiff Enthusiasts, extreme fades

How to Fade Your Denim

The beauty of raw selvedge is in the fade. Here’s how to get the best results:

Wear them in. Aim for 6 months of daily wear before your first wash. The longer you go, the more pronounced your fades will be. Whiskers (hip creases), honeycombs (behind the knees), and stacks (ankle bunching) are the classic fade points.

First soak. For unsanforized denim, do a lukewarm soak for 30–45 minutes to remove shrinkage. For sanforized raw denim, you can skip this step.

Wash sparingly. When you do wash, turn inside out, use cold water, and hang dry. Never tumble dry. Some purists use only water; others add a small amount of mild detergent.

Spot clean. Between washes, spot-clean stains with a damp cloth. Some swear by the freezer method for freshness, though its effectiveness is debated.
